It is not uncommon to be more afraid of success than failure. This mindset exists inside all of us, if we let it take hold. The best way to counter the fear of success is with preparation. As an exercise I often recommend writing down in great detail the kind of life you “personally” would want to live if your business tripled tomorrow. I’m not just talking about exotic holidays and convertibles… I’m talking about how you would build your team, manage your workload, contribute to your community etc.
You have to make room for the life you want, otherwise you will run from it when it appears… I can be guilty of this too.

We want to make sure that we don’t refuse an opportunity because it takes a little too far from our comfort zones. The new opportunties that will present themselves tomorrow almost always stretch us beyond what we are comfortable with. Everything is difficult until it becomes easy. For anything to become easy we must stretch through the difficulty and the discomfort.
Just after my son was born an unforgettable opportunity came my way. I was asked to perform onstage with one of the biggest rock bands in the world, Mumford and Sons. They wanted me to perform a scene from the Grapes of Wrath in a tribute to Steinbeck that they were holding in Monterey, CA. It was small scale for them but large scale for me… Just 1100 people in the room, that’s all… and years since I had performed… scary and uncomfortable.
The phone rang out of the blue and I was asked to perform with Mumford and Sons in Monterey… Was I ready? No. Could I get ready? You Bet!
But opportunities don’t always come when we’re ready, they come instead we say YES, and then get ready fast. When I said yes to Mumford and Sons, I ended up having one of the greatest experiences of my life. We get to create momentum. Unstoppable momentum.
